Suffolk County Community Development

The initiative works closely with 12 municipalities and several non-profit organizations to formulate an Annual Action Plan for block grant fund utilization, along with a multi-year Consolidated Plan and projects aimed at affordable housing and community development tailored to the needs of each community. Citizen participation is crucial, with public hearings conducted in each municipality during September, October, and November of each program year, where residents can propose funding for eligible activities. Following these hearings, municipalities select which projects to fund, and the County prepares the application for submission to HUD. The Community Development Office oversees around 250 active projects annually across Suffolk County, including the construction and rehabilitation of parks, streets, sidewalks, community and senior centers, public services, water main installations, accessibility improvements, housing rehabilitation, and downtown revitalization.
