This initiative is a collaborative effort involving Suffolk County Community College, the Longwood Central School District, various governmental agencies, and local businesses to create a distinctive and supportive atmosphere for students at risk of leaving school. Funded by a grant from the New York State Education Department, the Liberty Partnerships Program (LPP) caters to students in grades 7-12 who may not be achieving their academic potential. It offers academic services designed to help these students complete high school and transition successfully into higher education or the workforce. Juniors and seniors in the program can participate in a two-semester course that grants one college credit upon completion. This includes a non-credit course in the first semester focusing on essential skills like reading, writing, study techniques, critical thinking, and computer literacy, while the second semester covers subjects relevant to college students and enhances research abilities. Additional credit-bearing courses are available for those who complete this sequence. Services provided by the LPP include: college preparatory classes; a Suffolk County Community College seminar (which earns 1.0 college credit); an LPP club and newsletter; team-building activities; cultural enrichment outings; counseling; tutoring and college placement test assistance; ACT/SAT prep classes; Regents exam review sessions; leadership sessions for students and parents; and workforce preparation opportunities, including visits to local businesses and internships.
