Westhampton Beach Learning Center

This program caters to students between the ages of 13 and 21 who are in grades 8 through 12, specifically targeting those with various developmental disabilities. Its main objective is to enhance each student's capabilities and teach them skills that promote independence within the limits of their disabilities. The program includes academic instruction with a focus on practical skill development and offers simulated work experiences to apply what they learn. Additionally, it addresses behavior management, independent living skills, and social interactions. When necessary, discrete trial teaching and applied behavioral analysis are integrated with the standard curriculum. Functional assessments and behavior intervention plans are implemented for additional support. Students may have classifications such as Multiple Disabilities, Autism, Intellectual Disability, Emotional Disturbance, Speech Impairment, or Other Health Impairment. The Secondary Developmental Program also aims to maximize potential and foster independence, concentrating on cognitive improvement and sensory motor skills. Support through functional assessments and behavior intervention plans is available as needed. The 12:1:4 Program adopts a multi-sensory learning approach, focusing on cognitive enhancement, sensory motor skills, and the use of adaptive tools to facilitate movement and independence. Students in this class require staff assistance throughout the school day, with instruction provided through hand-over-hand support. Related services, including speech, occupational therapy, and physical therapy, are delivered in a group setting. All participants are evaluated using the New York State Alternate Assessment. The District Based Program offers a half-day at WHBLC at Shoreham-Wading River High School and a half-day at H.B. Ward Career & Tech SCE or TSP at BLC, aimed at equipping students with work skills for entry-level jobs or aiding in their transitional planning. Functional assessments and behavior intervention plans are also available for support as needed. Programs are conducted at various locations.
