This program oversees the charity care policies of hospitals in Washington state. Charity Care provides coverage for essential medical services, such as inpatient stays and emergency visits, for those with low income.
Intake Procedure: To learn about a particular hospital's charity care policy, reach out to their billing office. Additionally, the Department of Health's website offers information on charity care policies for hospitals in Washington. Patients have the option to apply for charity care while hospitalized or after discharge. Although hospitals must consider applications at any time, it is advisable to apply promptly, ideally before the bill is sent to collections.
Fees: There are no fees associated with this application.

- Households with an income below 100% of the Federal Poverty Level are entitled to have their hospital bills fully covered, while those above this threshold may receive partial reductions based on income and household size, with discounts available up to 400% of the Federal Poverty Level, regardless of citizenship status.
