This program provides monthly financial support to eligible survivors of workers who were covered under Social Security and have passed away. It also includes a one-time payment of $255 to the surviving spouse.
Application Process: For help, you can either call or visit a local Social Security office. If the surviving spouse or child is not already receiving benefits, they must submit an application for this payment within two years following the worker's death.
Costs: There are no fees associated with this service.

- Monthly Payments are available for widows or widowers aged 60 or older (50 or older if disabled), any age caring for a child of the deceased under 16 or who is disabled, unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 if full-time students), and certain other dependents. A one-time payment is available for spouses living with the worker at the time of death or who were eligible for benefits.
