- Monthly payments are available to widows or widowers aged 60 or older (or 50 if disabled), those of any age caring for a child of the deceased under 16 or disabled, unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 if full-time students), disabled children over 18 with disabilities that began before age 22, certain stepchildren and grandchildren, and parents aged 62 or older who were dependent on the deceased. The one-time payment is for the spouse living in the same household, or if living apart, they can still receive it if they were receiving benefits or became eligible upon the worker's death; children can only receive it if there is no surviving spouse.
