This program provides monthly financial assistance to qualifying survivors of workers who were covered under Social Security and have passed away. It also includes a one-time payment of $255 to the surviving spouse.
Intake Procedure: For help, you can call or visit a nearby Social Security office. If the eligible surviving spouse or child is not already receiving benefits, they need to apply for this payment within two years from the date of death.
Fees: There are no fees associated with this program.

- Monthly benefits are available to widows or widowers aged 60 or older (or 50 if disabled), widows or widowers of any age caring for a child of the deceased under 16 or disabled, unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 if full-time students), children 18 or older with disabilities that began before age 22, certain stepchildren, grandchildren, and parents aged 62 or older who were dependent on the deceased. The one-time payment is available to the spouse living in the same household or, under certain conditions, to those living apart.
