This program provides monthly financial support to eligible survivors of workers who were covered by Social Security and have passed away. It also includes a one-time payment of $255 to the surviving spouse.
To apply, individuals can call for help or visit a nearby Social Security office. If the eligible surviving spouse or child is not already receiving benefits, they need to apply for this payment within two years following the date of death.
There are no associated fees.

- Monthly benefits are available to widows or widowers aged 60 or older (or 50 or older if disabled), any age caring for the deceased's child under 16 or disabled, unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 if full-time students), disabled children over 18 with disabilities starting before age 22, certain stepchildren and grandchildren, and parents over 62 who depended on the deceased for at least half of their support. The one-time payment is available to spouses living in the same household or those who were apart but were receiving or became eligible for benefits upon the worker's death.
