This program provides monthly financial support to eligible survivors of workers who were covered by Social Security and have passed away. It also includes a one-time payment of $255 to the surviving spouse.
Application Process: Individuals can seek help by calling or visiting a nearby Social Security office. If the surviving spouse or child is not already receiving benefits, they must submit their application for this payment within two years following the worker's death.
Costs: There are no fees associated with this program.

- Monthly payments are available for widows or widowers aged 60 or older (50 or older if disabled), any age caring for the deceased’s child under 16 or disabled, unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 if full-time students), individuals over 18 with disabilities that began before age 22, certain stepchildren or grandchildren, and parents aged 62 or older who depended on the deceased for support. The one-time payment is for spouses living in the same household or those eligible for benefits upon the worker's death.
