This program allows workers and their families to maintain their group health benefits for a limited time after losing their health coverage under specific conditions.

Intake Procedure: If an individual is covered by an employer-sponsored health plan on their final day of employment, the plan must issue a notification regarding eligibility to opt for COBRA and to access the premium reduction. This notification should contain any required forms for enrollment.

Fees: The premium charged cannot exceed 102% of the cost incurred by the plan for individuals in similar situations who have not experienced a qualifying event. This includes both the employee's contribution and any employer contribution made prior to the qualifying event, plus an additional 2% for administrative expenses.

Who can use this

COBRA applies to group health plans for employers with 20 or more employees who were active for more than half of the typical business days in the previous year. A qualified beneficiary is typically someone covered by the group health plan the day before a qualifying event, including employees, their spouses, or dependent children.
