Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, along with other state and local organizations. Each district operates independently from state agencies and addresses local requirements by offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and include areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste. Land Development programs cover Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be requested for community events. Immunizations are provided by local health departments, offering routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or special off-site events, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for families and their healthcare providers. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers supplemental nutrition assistance, health screenings, nutrition education, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with dietitians, and breastfeeding support, serving pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women’s Health Check program, funded federally, provides free screenings for breast and cervical cancer to eligible women without insurance covering these services, based on specific income and age criteria.
