Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, as well as multiple state and local organizations. Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. Services may include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. These programs encompass Day Care, Epidemiology (including Animal Bites and Foodborne Illness), Food Establishments (permitting and inspections), Indoor Air Quality (such as Radon), Lead Health, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five.
