Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local agencies. Each district operates independently and addresses local health requirements by offering a range of services, which may differ from one district to another. Available services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified state plan for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This encompasses programs that address the relationship between human health and the physical environment, including Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste. Land Development programs cover Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be arranged for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at low or no cost for families in need. Travel vaccinations are available by appointment, and adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that tracks immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive necessary vaccines timely. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS, AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: This supplemental nutrition program provides healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK is a federally funded initiative offering free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests, based on income guidelines and age criteria.
