Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements by offering diverse services that differ from one district to another. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) partners with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Plan Reviews, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service provides Family Planning resources, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. Various birth control methods are available. Educational materials can be requested. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health districts administer routine childhood vaccinations at clinics within the health district or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are either low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment; please contact the local health district for specific vaccine requirements for travel. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps you and your doctor track immunizations and ensures you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that offers: Healthy foods monthly redeemable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information about community programs and healthcare referrals, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational resources. WIC serves: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five. Services are available in English, with interpreters accessible upon request.
