Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They address local health needs by offering diverse services, which can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a comprehensive statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism threats and public health crises. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and include areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste. Land Development programs cover Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be requested for community outreach. Local health departments also provide routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at low or no cost for families in need. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and adult vaccines may include Td boosters, hepatitis A and B, pneumonia, and influenza. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that tracks immunizations for you and your family. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, individual counseling with dietitians, and breastfeeding support, serving pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women’s Health Check program, funded federally, provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance coverage for these services.
