MEDICAL RESERVE CORPS PHONE # 208-533-3145 DISTRICT OFFICE: The seven health districts in Idaho collaborate closely with the Department of Health and Welfare as well as various state and local organizations. Each district operates independently and has a health board appointed by county commissioners. They address local needs by offering a diverse range of services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, environmental health, health promotion, preparedness, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) partners with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational resources and speakers for community events upon request. Emergency contraception is also accessible. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine vaccinations for children through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact the local health department for required vaccines for their destinations. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be provided. The Immunization Registry (a free, voluntary, and confidential service) helps individuals track their immunizations and ensures they receive only the necessary vaccines when due. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that provides: healthy foods each month via WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information about community resources, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: pregnant women; breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum); infants under one year; and children under five years. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. Women's Health Check is available for women without insurance covering mammograms or pap tests, who meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without insurance and exhibiting symptoms indicative of breast or cervical cancer; or age 65 and older without Medicare or lacking Medicare part B.
