Each district is governed by a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from any state agency. They cater to local requirements by offering diverse services that may differ across districts, including community health nursing, environmental health, health promotion, preparedness, and nutrition programs. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) partners with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and addressing bioterrorism threats and public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: The Environmental Health programs address the connections between human health and the physical environment, including the ecosystems of plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service provides Family Planning resources, which include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, and educational materials along with speakers can be arranged for community presentations upon request. Emergency contraception is also accessible. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments conduct routine childhood vaccination clinics at their facilities or occasionally at special off-site locations, with low-cost or no-cost options for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact the local health department for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps individuals and their healthcare providers keep track of immunizations and ensures that only necessary vaccines are received when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative for Women, Infants, and Children, providing healthy foods monthly through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years of age. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack health insurance that covers these tests, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age groups: ages 50-64, ages 30-49 with symptoms of breast or cervical cancer, or age 65 and older without Medicare or Medicare Part B.
