Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, environmental health, health promotion, preparedness, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in Environmental Health address the connection between human health, the physical environment, and the ecosystem. **These programs include: Day Care; Epidemiology (Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings and STD testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, and educational resources can be provided for community events upon request. Emergency contraception is also accessible. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are typically low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment. Contact your local health department to learn which vaccines are necessary for specific travel destinations. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will be responsible for the vaccine costs. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your healthcare provider keep track of your immunization history. It ensures you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, providing monthly healthy foods through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling from registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women; Breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum); Infants up to one year of age; and Children under five years of age. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded initiative provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. The program is available to women without insurance covering mammograms or pap tests, who meet income guidelines, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without insurance and exhibiting symptoms of breast or cervical cancer; or age 65 and older without Medicare or Medicare part B.
