Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and other local and state entities. Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements by offering a diverse range of services, which can differ from one district to another. Services may include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism threats and public health crises. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (including animal bites and food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (like radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs focus on critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision review, and subsurface sewage evaluations and permits. The Family Planning services offered include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. Local health departments also administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay, and offer overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps track vaccinations for individuals and families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program provides monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, and individual counseling with registered dietitians. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women, including those without insurance covering these tests, who meet income guidelines, and fall within specific age criteria.
