Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and other local and state organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements by providing diverse services that can differ from one district to another, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Environmental Health initiatives address the relationship between human health and the surrounding physical environment, covering areas such as day care, epidemiology (animal bites, food, and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits, indoor air quality (radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs focus on critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision review, and subsurface sewage evaluations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program offers monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, referrals to healthcare providers, and breastfeeding support for eligible pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five.
