About this resource

The Medical Reserve Corps can be reached at 208-239-5208, and the Swine Flu Hotline for Region 6 is available at 208-234-5888. Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and other local and state organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements by providing diverse services that can differ from one district to another, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are offered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For the most current information regarding services in your area, reach out to your nearest District Health Department. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism threats and public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives address the relationship between human health and the surrounding physical environment, covering areas such as day care, epidemiology (animal bites, food, and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits, indoor air quality (radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs focus on critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision review, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals, with various birth control options available. Immunizations for children are provided at local health department clinics, often at low or no cost for families in need, and overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis A and B, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free and confidential service that helps track vaccination history. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program offers monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, referrals to healthcare providers, and breastfeeding support for eligible pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for women who meet specific criteria, such as lacking insurance coverage for these tests and falling within certain age and income guidelines.
