Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, as well as other local and state agencies. Each district features a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. Services offered by these districts can differ, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided under contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Environmental Health initiatives address the connections between human health and the environment, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology, food establishments, indoor air quality, lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs focus on critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision review, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams, and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Local health departments also provide routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and adult vaccines may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary service that helps individuals track their immunizations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, and referrals for eligible pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and young children. The Women’s Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to qualified women without insurance coverage for these tests.
