Each district features a health board appointed by county commissioners and functions independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements by offering a diverse range of services, which can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. FAMILY PLANNING: This program offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy tests, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, and educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. For overseas immunizations, appointments are required. Contact your local health department to determine which vaccines are necessary for specific destinations. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will need to cover the cost of the vaccine. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative for women, infants, and children that provides healthy foods each month through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information about community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance coverage for mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age categories: ages 50-64; ages 30-49 without insurance and exhibiting symptoms related to breast or cervical cancer; or women aged 65 and older who are not eligible for Medicare or lack Medicare part B.
