Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives address the connections between human health and the surrounding environment, covering areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste. Land Development programs include Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics, which may be low-cost or free for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact local health departments for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary service that helps families and doctors track immunizations and ensure timely vaccinations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, community referrals, individual counseling with dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. It serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants, and children under five. The Women’s Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance for these services, meet income guidelines, and fall into specific age categories or have certain health conditions.
