Each district features a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from any state agency. They address local needs by offering diverse services that differ across districts, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing and responding to bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs under Environmental Health address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services that encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings, as well as HIV testing), and referrals. Various birth control methods are available. Educational materials can be requested. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often provided at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact the local health department to determine which vaccines are necessary for their travel destinations. WIC serves: pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years of age.
