Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local demands by offering a range of services that differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, often provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) partners with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. Most birth control methods are available, and educational materials can be requested. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact the local health department to determine which vaccines are necessary for each travel destination. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will be responsible for the cost of the vaccine. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you, your family, and your doctor keep track of your immunizations and ensures you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Healthy foods monthly that can be purchased with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information about community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women; Breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum); Infants up to one year of age; and Children under five years of age. Languages: English, with interpreters available.
