Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. These districts cater to local needs, offering a variety of services that differ from one district to another. Services can include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs consist of: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services that include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings, as well as HIV testing) and referrals. Various birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments deliver routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are typically low cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to determine which vaccines are necessary for specific travel destinations. Vaccines for adults, such as tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps you and your doctor track immunization history and ensure you receive only the vaccines you need when necessary. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Healthy foods monthly that can be bought with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational resources. WIC serves: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. To qualify for the Women's Health Check, women must lack health insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fit one of the following categories: Ages 50-64, Ages 30-49 without a pap test in 5 years or longer, never had a pap test, under 50 with breast cancer symptoms (clinician approval required), or age 65 or older without Medicare or Medicare part B.
