Idaho is divided into seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local agencies. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local needs by offering a diverse range of services, which can differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other partners to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment, covering areas such as Day Care Inspections, Epidemiology (including Animal Bites and Foodborne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste. Land Development programs focus on regulations concerning Critical Materials, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage evaluations and permits. FAMILY PLANNING services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (with cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, offering various birth control methods. Educational materials and speakers are available for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS are provided by local health departments, offering routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or special off-site clinics, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations require appointments, and adult vaccines (like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza) may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for individuals and families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program supplies healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, and referrals to healthcare providers, serving pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests, meeting specific income guidelines and age criteria.
