Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by offering diverse services that can differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. FAMILY PLANNING: This service includes education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (which encompass cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational resources and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments offer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at health departments or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are either low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact the local health department to determine necessary vaccines for specific destinations. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for individuals and their families, ensuring they receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC offers a supplemental nutrition program providing healthy foods monthly through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information on community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five years. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance for these tests, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age groups or conditions.
