Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements by offering a diverse range of services, which can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. FAMILY PLANNING: This service includes education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD testing, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational materials and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments offer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are typically low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to determine which vaccines are required for specific travel destinations. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps you and your healthcare provider keep track of your immunizations and ensure you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC provides a supplemental nutrition program that offers healthy foods each month through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information about community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year old, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance for mammograms or pap tests, meet income requirements, and fall into specific age categories.
