Idaho's seven health districts operate in close partnership with the Department of Health and Welfare and other state and local organizations. Each district has a board of health appointed by county commissioners and functions independently of any state agency. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local flora and fauna, covering areas such as daycare inspections, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality, lead health initiatives, methamphetamine lab oversight, public pool regulations, and solid waste management. Land Development initiatives include critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, Rathdrum aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations, permits, and inspections. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals keep track of their immunizations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program provides monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education, community referrals, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Resource Nurse program offers general health information and referrals via phone and appointments, with potential vouchers for acute care needs.
