Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. These services encompass community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are facilitated through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: The Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Key Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.**Land Development programs cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections).FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational materials and speakers for community events upon request.IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide standard childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment; contact the local health department to determine necessary vaccines for specific travel destinations. Adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed.WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that provides: Monthly healthy food options through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual consultations with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and access to recipes, newsletters, and educational resources. WIC serves: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years of age. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor.
