Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, along with various state and local organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. The services offered can differ by district, addressing local health needs through programs such as community health nursing, home health care, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition initiatives. Many of these services are facilitated through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other public health entities to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs tackle issues related to human health and the environment, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology, food establishment inspections, indoor air quality, and solid waste management. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, and various birth control methods. Immunization clinics provide low-cost or free vaccinations for children and adults, while the Immunization Registry helps track vaccination history. The WIC program offers nutritional support to women, infants, and children, including healthy food vouchers and health screenings.
