Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local needs by offering a diverse range of services that can differ from one district to another. These services encompass community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency service responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism incidents and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem of plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.**Land Development programs cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections).FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screening, sexually transmitted disease testing, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request.IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations at clinics held at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are either low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Travel-related immunizations are available by appointment, so it's advisable to contact the local health department for specific vaccine requirements for each destination. Adult vaccines, including tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program designed for Women, Infants, and Children, providing: Monthly healthy food options that can be purchased with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information on community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women; Breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum); Infants up to one year of age; and Children under five years of age. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: The Women's Health Check is a federally funded initiative that provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. This program is available to women who lack health insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Aged 50-64; Aged 30-49 and have not had a pap test in 5 years or longer, or never had a pap test; Under 50 with symptoms suggestive of breast cancer (requires clinician approval); Aged 65 or older and not eligible for Medicare, or lack Medicare part B.
