Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local needs by offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in Environmental Health address the connections between human health and the physical environment, including the ecosystem of plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational materials and speakers can be requested for community presentations. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact the local health department to learn which vaccines are required for specific travel destinations. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your healthcare provider track your immunizations and ensure you receive only the necessary vaccines. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that provides healthy foods monthly via WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, community program information, and referrals to healthcare providers. It also offers individual counseling with registered dietitians and breastfeeding support. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five years. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance coverage for these tests, meet income requirements, and fall into specific age categories or have certain health conditions.
