Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. Services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, often provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Health District office oversees the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office, which collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and surrounding ecosystems. **These programs encompass: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are typically low-cost or free for parents unable to pay. Travel immunizations are available by appointment; contact your local health department for specific vaccine requirements for different destinations. Adult vaccines like tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps you and your doctor keep track of your immunizations and ensures you receive necessary vaccines when due. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information on community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women without insurance coverage for mammograms or pap tests, who meet income criteria, and are either: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without a pap test in 5 years or longer, or never had one; under 50 with breast cancer symptoms (with clinician approval); or 65 or older without Medicare or Medicare part B.
