Idaho consists of seven health districts that work in partnership with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local agencies. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local demands by offering diverse services that may differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. These programs cover areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (including Animal Bites and Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (including Permits and Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (like Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. Land Development initiatives encompass Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water management, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. Immunization services are offered by local health departments for routine childhood vaccinations, available at health department clinics or special off-site events, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are by appointment, and adult vaccines may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track vaccination status. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, referrals, and individual counseling for eligible pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five.
