Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by providing a range of services that differ by district, including community health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive state plan for responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs focus on the interactions between human health and the physical environment, as well as the surrounding ecosystem. **These programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives encompass: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service provides Family Planning assistance, including education, counseling, pregnancy tests, comprehensive physical exams (which include cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be arranged for community outreach upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments offer routine childhood vaccinations at clinics within the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are either low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Travel immunizations can be scheduled by appointment, and it's advisable to contact the local health department to determine which vaccines are necessary for specific travel destinations. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps you, your family, and your doctor keep track of immunizations and ensure you receive only the necessary vaccines when due. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative for Women, Infants, and Children, offering: Monthly healthy food packages redeemable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information on community resources, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and access to recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC eligibility includes: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year old, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance that covers these tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without insurance and showing symptoms indicative of breast or cervical cancer; or Age 65 and older without Medicare or lacking Medicare part B.
