Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, along with other state and local organizations. Each district has a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements by offering a variety of services, which may differ from one district to another. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. These include daycare regulations, epidemiology (animal bites, food, and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits, indoor air quality assessments, lead health initiatives, methamphetamine lab oversight, public pool management, and solid waste management. Land Development programs cover critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water system oversight, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventories, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Immunization services offer routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay, as well as overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters and influenza shots, may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals track their vaccination history. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, individual counseling with dietitians, and breastfeeding support. It serves pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women’s Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests, based on specific income and age criteria.
