Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This includes programs that address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A wide range of birth control methods is available, along with educational materials upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or special off-site events. These vaccinations are often available at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are provided by appointment. Contact your local health department to determine which vaccines are necessary for specific travel destinations. Vaccines for adults, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be accessible. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps you, your family, and your doctor track immunizations and ensure you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that provides healthy foods each month through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials.
