Each district features a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem of plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings, as well as HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational resources upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them.
