Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of any state agency. They cater to local requirements by offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This encompasses programs that address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools.** Land Development Programs cover: Mortgage Surveys; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH (Family Planning): Offers Family Planning services that include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. Various birth control methods are available, and educational materials and speakers can be provided for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department, often at low or no cost for parents unable to pay. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps you and your healthcare provider keep track of your immunizations and ensures you receive only the necessary vaccines when due. Always bring your immunization records to each appointment. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Monthly healthy food packages redeemable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling from registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational resources. WIC serves: Pregnant women; breastfeeding women up to one year postpartum; non-nursing women up to 6 months postpartum; infants up to one year; and children under five years. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women without insurance covering these tests. To qualify, women must meet income criteria, be U.S. Citizens or possess an Alien ID card, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 40-49 without a pap test in 5 years or more, or never had a pap test (priority given); age 30-49 with breast cancer symptoms (clinician approval required); age 30-39 with cervical cancer symptoms confirmed by a healthcare provider; or age 65 or older not eligible for Medicare or lacking Medicare part B.
