Governor's Office

The governor holds the highest executive authority and is responsible for appointing department leaders as well as members of various boards and commissions. He has the ability to issue executive orders that carry the weight of law and is tasked with drafting and proposing a budget to the state legislature. In special circumstances, the governor can call for extraordinary sessions of the legislature. He is required to sign bills passed by the legislature for them to become law and has the authority to veto legislation, though he must provide reasons for his veto. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds majority vote from both chambers. Additionally, the governor serves as the commander-in-chief of the state's military forces, unless they are activated for federal service. He also presides over the Board of Examiners and leads the Board of Land Commissioners. Language assistance in English and Spanish is available.
