About this resource

Head Start is a nationwide preschool initiative aimed at children from families that meet income eligibility criteria. Local nonprofit organizations manage Head Start centers across the country. They accept applications for children aged 0 to 5 years, specifically targeting families whose income falls below poverty thresholds. The program also accommodates children with special needs or those considered at high risk, and a limited number of over-income children with special needs may be accepted. Services provided include assistance with medical, dental, educational, and social needs, all at no cost. Families must provide proof of income, the child's birth date, and immunization records. Supportive services offered by Head Start include social services, parent involvement, nutrition, mental health, health education, services for disabilities, dental care, and transportation. Head Start aims to enhance the lives of children, families, staff, and the community by providing quality education and family-centered services. The program serves low-income children aged 0-5, running a five-day-a-week schedule for 12 hours each day, during which four meals are provided. Parents are encouraged to volunteer, and positive parenting classes are offered to assist families in educational areas. Transportation is available, and services are primarily in English. For intake procedures, interested individuals should reach out for additional information.
