About this resource
The Medical Reserve Corps can be reached at 208-239-5208, and the Swine Flu Hotline for Region 6 is available at 208-234-5888. Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and other local and state agencies. Each district features a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements, offering diverse services that may differ across districts, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, often through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For updated information on available services in your area, contact your nearest District Health Department. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health crises. Environmental Health programs tackle the relationship between human health and the environment, covering areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. Land Development programs address Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational materials and speakers can be requested for community presentations. Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay, as well as overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that tracks immunizations for families and their healthcare providers. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program supplies healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, individual counseling with dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests, meeting specific income guidelines and age criteria.
