About this resource

The Medical Reserve Corps can be reached at 208-239-5208, and the Swine Flu Hotline for Region 6 is available at 208-234-5888. Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local agencies. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They address local needs by offering a diverse range of services, which may differ across districts. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For the latest information on community services, residents should contact their local District Health Department. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and include areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste. Land Development programs cover Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Local health departments offer routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at low or no cost for parents unable to pay, as well as overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free and confidential service that helps individuals track their immunizations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, referrals, and breastfeeding support to pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women without insurance covering these tests, based on specific age and income criteria. For general information, locations, and appointments, individuals should call.
