Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and other local and state organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They address local health needs by offering diverse services, which may differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs tackle issues at the intersection of human health and the environment, covering areas such as day care, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits, indoor air quality (radon), lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs include critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision review, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services offer education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with most birth control methods available. Immunizations for children are provided at local health departments, often at low or no cost for families in need, along with overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track vaccination history. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides nutritious foods, health screenings, nutrition education, community referrals, and breastfeeding support to eligible pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to uninsured women who meet specific income criteria and age requirements.
