About this resource

The Medical Reserve Corps can be reached at 208-415-5180, and the Swine Flu Hotline is available at 208-415-5299. Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local entities. Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local demands by offering diverse services that may differ across districts, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For the most current information about local services, contact your nearest District Health Department. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and include areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste. Land Development programs cover Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be requested for community presentations. Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, with low or no cost options available for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are offered by appointment, and travelers should contact the local health department for necessary vaccines. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for individuals and their healthcare providers. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, individual counseling with registered dietitians, and breastfeeding support. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program, funded federally, provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women, including those without insurance for mammograms or pap tests, those meeting income guidelines, and specific age groups. Languages available include English, with interpreters accessible. For general information, locations, and appointments, please call.
