Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, along with many state and local organizations. Each district features a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They address local requirements by offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives deal with the intersection of human health, the physical environment, and ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (including radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs encompass critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services offer education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers for community events can be requested. Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at low or no cost for families in need, and overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Adult vaccines may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for individuals and their families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides nutritious foods, health screenings, nutrition education, and referrals for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and young children. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these services. Eligible participants include women aged 50-64, those aged 30-49 who haven't had a pap test in five years or longer, women under 50 with breast cancer symptoms (with clinician approval), and women aged 65 and older who are not eligible for Medicare.
