About this resource

The Medical Reserve Corps can be reached at 208-415-5180, and the Swine Flu Hotline is available at 208-415-5299. Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare along with several state and local organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local demands by offering diverse services that can differ among districts, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For the most current information about community services, contact your nearest District Health Department. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health crises. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food, and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (including radon), lead health, methamphetamine lab oversight, public pool regulation, and solid waste management. Land Development programs include critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations and permits. Family Planning services offer education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers are also accessible for community events upon request. Immunization services provide routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or special off-site events, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact local health departments for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis A and B, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that tracks immunizations for you and your family, ensuring timely vaccinations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program supplies healthy foods monthly through vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, and individual counseling with dietitians. WIC serves pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program, funded federally, provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance covering these tests, meeting income guidelines, and falling within specific age categories or health conditions. Language support is available. For general information, locations, and appointments, please call.
